The Weekly Update - Nothing Will Ever be the Same!
What a couple of weeks! Sorry about the silence last week, it has been crazy hectic around here, let me get you caught up!
First of all, the Square store construction is well under way! If you peek at the back of the store you’ll notice we’re missing small things in the back like a wall, replaced with a lovely gigantic plastic sheet! That said, the space is coming along well and we are very excited about how things are going to look when it is all done! Keep an eye on our Instagram @morefuncomicsdenton to see behind the scenes pics as they happen.
Speaking of construction, we’re in the back of the building that houses the Game Center and preparing that as quickly as possible! Our target open date has been pushed back a week to March 6th due to time constraints, but we should be in good shape for the new space by that day.
Behind the scenes, I’ve been working on getting ready for the ComicsPRO annual meeting in Charlotte North Carolina! Last year I was fortunate enough to be chosen by my peers to be on the Board of Directors for ComicsPRO, and it has been a very interesting year to be in such a position. ComicsPRO is a trade organization that represents the interests of comic book retailers. The organization hosts a meeting every February to kick off the year where many of the best retailers in the industry get together with publishers and distributors to work on improving the business of comics. It’s no secret that the last year has been challenging for the business side of comics, even as the creative side and comic book culture in general is bigger than ever. I won’t hammer away at every point here, there’s hundreds of thousands of words written by others that are more comprehensive than I could possibly fit in this space. That said, the annual ComicsPRO meeting is easily the most productive industry event I attend every year, and my hope this year is that some frank discussion about how to improve the business of comics this week helps improve the industry for everyone.
Since I didn’t have a post last week I wanted to take a moment to make sure you don’t miss the release of the new Mister Miracle trade paperback from DC Comics last week. Tom King has been knocking out of the park for a few years now, and I love his take on DC’s “cosmic” characters so far. This book was one of the best selling and most critically acclaimed of 2018, if you didn’t pick it up before, do yourself a favor and get it now!
